Kyanite, also known as disthene, is an aluminosilicate mineral. This mineral is distinguished by its triclinic crystal structure and marked anisotropy, which manifests itself as variations in hardness along its crystallographic axes. The color of kyanite ranges from pale blue to deep blue, although color variations such as green or white can also appear depending on the inclusions and formation conditions. This mineral forms primarily in metamorphic rocks. Kyanite is often associated with other metamorphic minerals such as garnet, staurolite, and sillimanite, which share a similar chemical composition. Its presence is a valuable geological indicator for geologists, as it reveals information about the metamorphic conditions of the host rocks. Kyanite is valued in industry for its refractory properties. Its resistance to high temperatures makes it an essential component in the manufacture of ceramic and refractory products. Kyanite is sometimes cut into gemstones, although its brittleness and perfect cleavage make this process difficult.
