Gypsum is a mineral composed of calcium sulphate dihydrate, with the formula CaSO4 2H2O. It comes in the form of white or pink crystals or flakes, and can be translucent or opaque. It is very soluble in water, which explains why it is frequently present in aquatic sediments.
Gypsum was formed by the chemical action between water and rock, and is found in seabeds and sedimentary deposits from the Quaternary era. It is also formed by the dissolution of calcium carbonate, in areas with a release of water, and is sometimes mixed with organic substances such as calcium carbonate in humid areas.
Gypsum has many practical applications, thanks to its property of absorbing moisture. It is used in the construction industry because it can be molded to form walls, ceilings and floors. It is also used in sewage systems where it is mixed with clay to form bricks. Finally, it is used as a raw material in the agriculture industry, to manufacture fertilizers and mineral amendments.
