Pyrite is a metallic mineral with a golden color, formed mainly from iron and sulphur. Its hardness is 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its chemical composition is FeS2. Although its color is very close to that of gold, it is distinguished by its cubic or pyramid shape. Pyrite forms large masses, crystals, pyramidal concretions and veins. It is usually a mineral of primary origin that forms during the process of reduction of subterranean magmas. Pyrite is highly sought after in the metallurgical and chemical industries. It is used to make steels and alloys and to extract metals such as iron and sulphur. It is also used as an energy source, for the manufacture of catalysts and as an industrial pigment.
