Lapis lazuli, also known as lazurite, is a precious mineral that has been valued for its intense blue color since ancient times. Chemically, it is a sodium aluminum silicate, with the formula Na8[(AlSiO4)4(SO4,S,Cl)1-2]. Lapis lazuli is often speckled with small inclusions of other minerals, such as calcite (white) and pyrite (gold), which can add to its visual appeal. It has a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, making it quite soft compared to other gemstones. Lapis lazuli is primarily mined in Afghanistan, although it can also be found in other regions, such as Russia and Chile. Historically, it has been used in making jewelry, sculptures, and even paint pigments.
