Amber is a fossilized resin produced by conifers millions of years ago. This resin, secreted by the tree to protect itself against external aggressions, has hardened and fossilized over time. Its color, ranging from light yellow to dark brown or even red, depends on the nature of the original resin. Organic inclusions, such as insects or plants, often present in amber, offer a fascinating glimpse into past life. The formation of amber is a complex process. The resin, after being secreted by the tree, accumulates in the soil or is transported by watercourses. It is then buried under new layers of sediment and undergoes chemical transformations under the effect of pressure and temperature. Chemically, amber is composed primarily of succinic acid, an organic substance that gives it certain specific properties. Amber is an amorphous organic material, meaning that it does not have an ordered crystalline structure. It is lighter than water and can float. Amber is also electrostatic, meaning that it becomes charged with static electricity by friction.
