Calcite is a mineral composed of calcium carbonate. It is one of the most abundant and widespread minerals on Earth. Its formation is mainly of biochemical origin, resulting from the accumulation of shells and skeletons of marine organisms. Calcite occurs in a wide variety of crystalline forms, ranging from transparent and colorless crystals to massive and colored aggregates.
Calcite has a relatively low density and a perfect cleavage in three directions, which facilitates its fragmentation into rhombohedrons. Calcite is easily recognized by its effervescence on contact with a dilute acid, releasing carbon dioxide. Calcite is often birefringent, that is to say it splits the light that passes through it, creating a double image effect.
Calcite is an essential constituent of carbonate sedimentary rocks such as limestones and marls. It is involved in the formation of caves and karsts, by dissolution in acidic waters. Calcite is used in many industries: construction, agriculture, metallurgy and the manufacture of chemicals.
