Orthoceras is an extinct genus of straight-shelled cephalopod, belonging to the class Nautiloidea. These marine organisms lived during the Ordovician, a period of the Paleozoic era that spanned from 485 to 444 million years BCE. Orthoceras fossils are generally cylindrical in shape, with a shell composed of successive chambers, separated by S-shaped partitions, and a central siphon. These features are typical of orthocone nautiloids, a group to which Orthoceras belongs. Orthoceras fossils are often found in sedimentary rocks, including limestones and shales, and are commonly used for the study of ancient marine environments and the evolution of cephalopods.
