Amethyst is a mineral belonging to the silicate family, more precisely, it is a variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO2). What sets amethyst apart and gives it its characteristic purple color are traces of iron impurities and exposure to natural radiation. The color can vary from pale pink to deep purple, and it can be altered by heat. Amethyst is commonly found in geodes, rock cavities filled with crystals. It is widely used as a gemstone in jewelry due to its hardness (7 on the Mohs scale) and beautiful color. The main deposits of amethyst are found in Brazil, Uruguay, Russia, Zambia and Arizona in the United States.
