Amethyst is a variety of quartz, a mineral composed of silicon dioxide, what distinguishes it from other varieties of quartz is its characteristic purple color, which can vary from pale to dark. Amethyst usually forms in cavities in volcanic or metamorphic rocks, where hydrothermal solutions rich in silica and iron circulate. These solutions gradually deposit quartz on the walls of these cavities, thus forming amethyst crystals. The most beautiful crystals are often found in geodes, spherical cavities lined with crystals. Amethyst is a relatively hard mineral, which gives it good scratch resistance. It is also transparent to translucent and often has a vitreous luster. Due to its beauty and hardness, amethyst is highly valued in jewelry. It is used to make jewelry such as rings, pendants, and necklaces. Amethyst is also used in decoration, particularly for the creation of art objects or sculptures.
