Dioptase is a mineral from the silicate family, more precisely a copper cyclosilicate. It generally appears in the form of hexagonal crystals of emerald green to bluish green color, often shiny. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 5, which makes it relatively soft. Dioptase is usually found in arid areas, in association with other copper minerals in secondary deposits. The main deposits are located in Kazakhstan, Namibia and the Republic of Congo. Due to its beautiful green color, dioptase is sometimes used in jewelry, although its low hardness limits its use to jewelry that will not be subject to excessive wear.
