Epidote is a silicate mineral belonging to the sorosilicate group, characterized by its complex chemical composition. This mineral is distinguished by its green color, which can vary from pistachio green to dark green, depending on the iron content. Epidote specimens can be found in metamorphic environments, particularly in greenschists and gneisses, where they form through the alteration of minerals such as plagioclase and amphibole. In terms of physical properties, epidote has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively resistant to abrasion. Its density typically ranges from 3.3 to 3.5 g/cm³. Epidote exhibits perfect cleavage along {001} and imperfect cleavage along {100}, which can influence how the mineral fractures under stress. Epidote is also of great interest to geologists, as its presence can indicate specific formation conditions in metamorphic rocks. Its formation is often associated with low- to medium-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic processes, making it a key mineral for the study of tectonic environments.
