Pyrolusite is a mineral composed primarily of manganese dioxide and is considered the most important manganese ore. Its crystal structure is tetragonal, and its crystals are usually acicular or fibrous in shape, although more massive shapes are also common. Pyrolusite varies in color from steel gray to jet black, with a metallic or submetallic luster. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Pyrolusite is often associated with other manganese minerals and typically forms in oxidizing environments of manganese deposits. In addition to its use as a manganese ore, pyrolusite also has applications in glass bleaching, dry cell manufacturing, and as a bleaching agent in ceramic production.
