Pyrolusite is a mineral composed mainly of manganese oxide (MnO2). It is gray to black in color and occurs as granular masses, hilly or in thin plates. It generally forms in hydrothermal and metamorphic zones fed with manganese oxide and other dissolved salts.
Pyrolusite can be used as a catalyst, in batteries and dyes. It is also an important pigment in graphite, lampblack and charcoal. It is also used in some water treatments and is mixed into cements, mortars and bricks to help with corrosion resistance.
