Wulfenite is a mineral composed of molybdenum and chromium, which belongs to the family of oxymetallates. It comes in the form of prismatic or cubic crystals with streaks, with various tones, ranging from yellow, red, brown to orange. The crystals can reach up to 3 cm in length and grow in forked needle-like groups, plates and doves.
The ore is formed primarily by evaporation and oxidation from sulphide and hydrothermal deposits, and is often associated with minerals such as stolzite, smithsonite, bournonite, pyrolusite and molybdenum arsenate.
Wulfenite is mined for molybdenum, which is used in the manufacture of alloys, paints, catalysts and refractories. It is also used for ornamental purposes and is valued by collectors for its colors and shape.
