Pyrite is also known as fool's gold because of its resemblance to gold. It generally appears in the form of cubic, octahedral, or pyritohedral crystals, its color is generally metallic golden to brass yellow, with a metallic luster. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it quite hard, but its brittleness is high because of its crystalline structure. Pyrite is a common mineral found in a wide variety of geologic formations, from sediments to metamorphic rocks. It is often associated with other minerals such as quartz, calcite, and other sulfides. Due to its sulfur content, it can produce sulfuric acid when exposed to water and oxygen, a process known as pyrite oxidation.
