Nephrite jade is a mineral belonging to the silicate family. Its chemical composition, mainly composed of magnesium and calcium silicates, gives it great hardness and resistance to fracture, making it a highly prized stone since Antiquity. Its color, generally green, can vary from light green to dark green depending on the impurities present in the rock. Nephrite is often translucent, even opaque, and has a vitreous luster. The formation of nephrite jade is related to high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic processes, which act on magnesium-rich rocks. Nephrite deposits are usually associated with metamorphic rocks such as schists and serpentines. Due to its remarkable physical properties, nephrite jade has been used by humans for thousands of years. Its hardness and resistance to wear have made it a preferred raw material for the manufacture of tools, weapons and art objects. In many cultures, nephrite jade has been considered a precious stone and has been used for the manufacture of jewelry and decorative objects.
