Carnelian is classified among the chalcedonies, a family of microcrystalline quartz. Its characteristic color, ranging from orange-pink to red-brown, is due to the presence of iron oxide. This natural pigmentation is the result of a complex geological process where silica-rich solutions are deposited in rock cavities, often volcanic. Over time, the iron oxide present in these solutions colors the silica deposits, giving rise to carnelian. The formation of carnelian is closely related to the geological conditions of the place where it is formed. Successive deposits of silica create colored bands or patterns characteristic of each stone. Carnelian has a relatively high hardness, which makes it resistant to scratches and makes it a popular stone in jewelry. Its vitreous luster and variable transparency, ranging from translucent to opaque, contribute to its beauty. Chemically, carnelian is mainly composed of silicon dioxide, just like quartz. It is the presence of iron oxide that gives it its characteristic color. The main deposits of carnelian are found in India, Brazil, Uruguay and Africa. These regions have geological conditions favorable to the formation of this semi-precious stone.
