Chrysoprase is a mineral of the silicate family, subgroup of tectosilicates, and belongs to the chalcedony variety. Its chemical formula is SiO2, with traces of nickel which gives it its distinctive green color. Its crystal structure is microcrystalline, meaning the crystals are so small that they can only be seen under a microscope. Chrysoprase is generally found in nickel deposits where it is formed by alteration of the latter. It is opaque to translucent with a glassy to matte sheen. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 6 to 7, which makes it relatively resistant to scratches. It is mainly used as an ornamental stone in jewelry making.
