Lazurite is a mineral from the silicate family, more precisely a sodium and sulfur aluminosilicate with sulfate groups. It generally occurs as blue granules in limestone, and is the main constituent of the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. It crystallizes in the isometric system, but well-formed crystals are rare. Most often, it appears in the form of granular masses with a glassy sheen. Its hardness on the Mohs scale varies between 5 and 5.5, which makes it quite resistant. Its density is approximately 2.4 to 2.5 g/cm³. The intense blue of lazurite is due to the presence of S3- ions in the crystal structure. This mineral is mainly used as a pigment for paint and ceramics.
