Anhydrite is a mineral belonging to the sulfate class that is distinguished from gypsum by the absence of water molecules in its crystalline structure. Often colorless or white, anhydrite can also have gray, bluish, purplish or pinkish hues depending on the impurities present. Its formation is generally linked to the evaporation of sea water or salt lakes.
Anhydrite occurs in various forms. It is found in compact masses, granular, fibrous or even well-developed prismatic crystals. A notable characteristic of anhydrite is its ability to transform into gypsum by absorption of water. This process can result in a significant increase in volume, which can cause problems in construction or mining where these minerals are present.
Anhydrite is used in the manufacture of cement, plaster, and sulfuric acid. It is also used as a drying agent and as a filler in the paper and plastics industries. In addition, some varieties of anhydrite, notably angelite, a blue variety, are valued for collecting and for making ornamental objects.
