Calcite is a mineral commonly found in the earth's crust, belonging to the carbonate category. Its chemical formula indicates that it is composed of calcium carbonate. It comes in various shapes and colors, although the most common is white or colorless. Calcite is known for its birefringent nature, that is to say it splits the light rays that pass through it, giving the impression of seeing a double image when looking at it. It has a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, which means it is relatively soft. Calcite is also soluble in hydrochloric acid. It is widely used in industry because of its ease of extraction and processing, for example in the manufacture of cement, as a soil acidity corrector or even as an ornamental stone.
