Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals that is widely distributed throughout rock formations, exhibiting a variety of shapes and colors. The term "apatite" comes from the Greek "apatein" meaning "to deceive", as this mineral has often been confused with other minerals such as olivine, peridot and beryl due to its wide range of colors. Apatite is the primary mineral used for the production of phosphates, which are essential for life on Earth. It is also a key component of tooth enamel and bone in living organisms. Apatite has a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, meaning it is hard enough to be used in jewelry, but it is also quite fragile and prone to breaking or cracking. Chemically, apatite is a calcium phosphate, usually fluorinated or chlorinated.
