Lepidolite is a mineral belonging to the mica family. These minerals are characterized by a layered structure, which gives them excellent cleavage, that is, they break easily into thin lamellae. Its name, from the Greek "lepis" means "scale", in reference to its lamellar appearance, and "lithos" which means "stone".
Chemically, lepidolite is a silicate of potassium, aluminum and lithium. The presence of lithium gives this mineral a characteristic color, often pink, violet or purple, although colorless or lighter varieties can be found. Lepidolite is a relatively soft mineral, with a hardness of between 2.5 and 3.
Lepidolite deposits are often associated with lithium-rich granites, pegmatites or metamorphic rocks. Due to its lithium content, lepidolite is mainly used as a lithium ore in the chemical industry. It is used in the production of batteries, special ceramics and glasses. In addition, lepidolite is sometimes used as a pigment due to its characteristic colour.
