Red jasper is a variety of jasper, a sedimentary rock composed mainly of silica. Its characteristic red color is due to the presence of iron oxides. Unlike some minerals that crystallize in an orderly manner, jasper has a microcrystalline structure, that is, its crystals are extremely small and intertwined, giving it a wide variety of patterns and shades of color.
The formation of red jasper is a complex geological process. It usually forms in marine environments where silica-rich sediments accumulate. Over time, under the effect of pressure and temperature, these sediments consolidate and transform into rock. Iron oxides, brought by groundwater, color the rock red.
Red jasper is a hard and tough rock, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Due to its attractive color, hardness, and ease of polishing, red jasper is widely used in jewelry and decoration. Red jasper is also valued for creating decorative objects such as sculptures, vases, and dishes.
