Rose quartz is a mineral belonging to the silicate family, just like the more common hyaline quartz. Its characteristic pink color is due to traces of elements such as manganese or titanium, which replace some of the silicon atoms in the crystal structure. This atomic substitution influences the absorption of certain wavelengths of light, giving the mineral its characteristic pink hue. Rose quartz typically forms in cavities in igneous rocks, such as granites or pegmatites, during the slow cooling of magma. Rose quartz is distinguished by its high hardness, which makes it scratch resistant. It is also transparent to translucent, with a glassy sheen. These physical properties, combined with its pleasant color, make it a popular stone in jewelry. Rose quartz is often cut into cabochons to highlight its color and transparency. It is also used to make decorative objects and sculptures.
