Diopside is a mineral from the silicate family, more precisely an inosilicate, which is found in the earth's crust. Its chemical formula indicates that it is composed of calcium, magnesium, silicon and oxygen. Diopside usually occurs as monoclinic crystals, often elongated, and can vary in color from light to dark green, but it can also be colorless, white, gray, brown or almost black. It is often used as an indicator of temperature and pressure in the Earth's mantle due to its presence in metamorphic and igneous rocks. Its name comes from the Greek "di" which means "two" and "opsis" which means "vision", in reference to its birefringence in crystals. It has a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, which means it is quite resistant to erosion and abrasion.
