Rhodonite is a pink to red colored semi-precious mineral that has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its chemical composition is mainly composed of manganese, oxygen and silicon, with traces of iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. It is a monoclinic mineral that usually forms in silicate-rich igneous rocks, such as granitic rocks and associated hydrothermal minerals.
Rhodonite is valued for its sparkle and bright pink color. It is often found as tabular crystals with striated faces or in heterogeneous masses containing inclusions. It is found in surface mines and quarries around the world, including Russia, Australia, the United States, China and Brazil.
The name “rhodonite” comes from the Greek for “rose”. Rhodonite was first used by the Greeks and Romans to make jewelry and ornaments. Today it is used to make jewelry, sculptures and statuettes, as well as gemstones as part of curiosities.
