Amber is a fossil resin mainly from conifers and other trees, which has hardened and sometimes fossilized over time. Its formation extends over millions of years and its origin dates back to the tertiary, or even secondary, era. Amber is usually a golden yellow color, but can vary from white to black to shades of red, blue or green. It is known for its lightness and its ability to float in salt water. Amber is often used in jewelry and is notorious for its ability to preserve ancient organisms, such as insects, that were trapped in the resin before it hardened. The most important deposits of amber are found in the Baltic Sea and the Dominican Republic.
