Microcline is a mineral belonging to the feldspar group. Its chemical formula indicates that it is mainly composed of potassium, aluminum, silicon and oxygen. This mineral is generally formed under conditions of slow cooling of plutonic igneous rocks such as granites, granodiorites or syenites.
Microcline is a polymorph of orthoclase, meaning that it has the same chemical composition but a different crystal structure. This structural difference is due to a more ordered atomic arrangement in microcline, which makes it more stable at low temperatures than orthoclase. The best-known variety of microcline is amazonite, characterized by its green color. This coloration is due to very small amounts of impurities, including lead and water.
Crystallographically, microcline belongs to the triclinic crystal system. Its crystals are usually prismatic, elongated or flattened, and can form twins. Microcline often has a perthitic structure, characterized by lamellar outgrowths of another feldspar (albite) inside its crystals.
