Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz, a mineral very common on Earth. Its brown to black color is due to the natural irradiation of radioactive minerals present in the surrounding rock, which causes the alteration of the crystal structures of Quartz. This irradiation induces the presence of defects in the crystal structure, which absorb certain wavelengths of light, thus giving Smoky Quartz its distinctive color. Smoky Quartz is commonly found as crystals of varying sizes, ranging from small specimens to large geodes. It is mainly used in jewelry and decoration, but also in certain industrial fields for its optical and electronic properties.
