Jasper is a sedimentary rock characterized by a wide variety of colors and patterns. Its mineralogical composition is mainly based on silica, in the form of microcrystalline quartz, but it can also contain other minerals in varying amounts, such as iron oxides that give it its red or brown hues. The formation of jasper is a complex geological process that involves the precipitation of silica in cavities or fractures of pre-existing rocks.
From the point of view of its physical properties, jasper is distinguished by its high hardness, comparable to that of quartz, and its opacity. Its texture is generally fine and dense. Due to its varied composition, jasper is not considered a mineral in the strict sense, but rather a rock. It is often classified among the chalcedonies, as are also agate and onyx.
Due to its beauty and hardness, jasper is used in many applications, including jewelry for making jewelry, decoration for creating art objects or architectural elements, and industry for producing abrasives or sharpening stones.
