Lepidolite is a mineral from the micas family, more precisely a potassium and lithium phyllosilicate. It is characterized by its pink to purple color, although some varieties can be yellow, gray or white. Its structure is monoclinic and it has a pearly to vitreous luster. Lepidolite typically forms in granitic pegmatites and is often associated with other minerals like tourmaline and quartz. It is also an important source of lithium, an element used in the manufacture of rechargeable batteries. Its hardness on the Mohs scale ranges from 2.5 to 3.5, which makes it a relatively soft mineral. Finally, lepidolite is also recognized for its thermal properties; it can in fact decompose into lepidocrocite and spodumene at high temperatures.
