Ammonites are fossils of marine cephalopod mollusks. These creatures lived in the oceans during the Mesozoic. Their shells were divided into chambers separated by partitions. The last chamber housed the animal, while the others served to regulate its buoyancy. The spiral shape of these shells is the result of continuous growth, where each new chamber was added to the outside of the previous one.
The diversity of ammonites was remarkable, with sizes ranging from a few centimeters to several meters in diameter. Their shells also exhibited a wide variety of shapes and ornamentation. These characteristics allowed scientists to use them as stratigraphic markers to reconstruct the geological history of the Earth.
Ammonite fossilization occurred when their bodies decomposed and their shells were replaced by minerals dissolved in the water. These fossils are now highly sought after by collectors and paleontologists. They provide information about the evolution of marine life and the climate changes that have marked our planet.
