Muscovite, also known as white mica, is a mineral belonging to the silicate group, subgroup of phyllosilicates. Its chemical formula indicates that it is mainly composed of potassium, aluminum, silicon and oxygen, with hydroxyl groups. It is characterized by its structure in very thin sheets or lamellae, which can be easily separated due to their weak connection between the planes. It is generally colorless to white, with a glassy to pearly sheen. Muscovite is a common mineral in metamorphic rocks like gneisses and schists, but it can also be found in igneous rocks like granites. It has a hardness of 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale, which means it is relatively soft. Muscovite has many industrial applications, including in the manufacture of paints, cosmetics, flame retardant materials and electrical insulators.
