Galena is a mineral of the sulfide class, with a chemical formula PbS. It is known for its high density, metallic luster and gray color and usually forms cubic or octahedral crystals, but can also occur in massive or grained form. Galena is an important source of silver, giving it great economic value. It is commonly found in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary deposits. Sphalerite is a mineral that belongs to the class of sulphides, more precisely, it is a zinc sulphide, with the chemical formula ZnS. It is mainly recognized as the most important source of zinc. Sphalerite typically occurs as cubic, octahedral, or dodecahedral crystals, but can also take the form of granular or compact masses. Its color varies from brown to black, although it can also be yellow, green or colorless. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 3.5 to 4, which makes it relatively soft. Sphalerite is also notable for its high optical dispersion, greater than that of diamond, which gives rise to remarkable brilliance when cut into a gem.
