Skutterudite is a mineral from the arsenide group, belonging to the sulphide class. Its chemical formula is (Co, Ni)As3, but it may contain traces of other elements such as iron, nickel and sometimes copper. Its crystal structure is cubic, which means its crystals have high symmetry and equal faces. It generally appears in the form of granular to grainy masses, and can be silver to steel gray in color, with a metallic sheen. Skutterudite has a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale, making it durable enough for some industrial uses. It is named after the Skutterud mine in Norway where it was initially discovered. Skutterudite is an important cobalt ore, and is also used for the production of arsenic.
