Feldspar is a family of silicate minerals that make up approximately 60% of the Earth's crust, making it the most abundant group of minerals. Feldspars are classified into two main groups: alkali feldspars and plagioclases. Alkali feldspars are composed of three main minerals: orthoclase, anorthite and albite, while plagioclases are a continuous series of solid solutions between albite and anorthite. Feldspars are characterized by their triclinic or monoclinic crystal structure, their hardness on the Mohs scale varying from 6 to 6.5, and their luster which can be glassy or pearly. They are generally white, gray, or pink in color, but can vary depending on the impurities present. Feldspars are widely used in industry, including the manufacture of glass and ceramics, as well as the production of paints and plastics.
