Lazurite is a mineral composed of sodium sulfide and magnesium calcium aluminosilicate silicate, with the chemical formula Na3Ca[(Al,Si)3O12]. It occurs as prismatic and tabular crystals, and has a hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Its luster is glassy and its base color is a rich, indigo blue.
Lazurite is formed from the vapors from volcanoes and the metamorphoses of limestone sedimentary rocks. In general, it is associated with other minerals such as calcite, pyrite and olivine. It is found in deposits of pyrite, lead and copper.
Lazurite is the primary mineral used to produce the gemstone known as lapis lazuli. It is also used in paints, tools and jewelry. Although not commonly mined, lazurite can be found in many parts of the world, including Afghanistan, Michigan, Russia, and California.
