Apatite actually refers to a group of phosphate minerals that all share a hexagonal crystal structure. This variation in composition explains the wide range of colors that apatites can exhibit, from intense blue to emerald green, yellow, purple, and even colorless. Impurities present in the crystal strongly influence its color. Apatites are formed in a variety of geological environments. They are found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Their formation is often linked to hydrothermal processes or the precipitation of phosphorus-rich fluids. In terms of their physical properties, apatites have a medium hardness. Their luster is vitreous and their transparency can vary depending on the presence of inclusions. Apatite is of considerable importance in geology and mineralogy. It is used as an indicator mineral to determine the conditions of rock formation. Due to its phosphorus composition, apatite plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycles.
