Dolomite is a mineral in the carbonate category, specifically a double carbonate of calcium and magnesium. It usually occurs as rhombohedral crystals, although these crystals may be so small that they appear as a powder or granular aggregate to the naked eye. Dolomite is white, grayish, greenish or pink in color and has a glassy to pearly sheen. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 3.5 to 4. This mineral is also the name of a carbonate sedimentary rock composed mainly of the mineral dolomite. Dolomite deposits are widely distributed around the world, including Italy, Switzerland, Austria and the United States.
