Azurite is a mineral of the carbonate class and belongs to the group of hydrated carbonates. Its chemical formula indicates that it is mainly composed of copper carbonate. It is well known for its distinct azure-blue color, hence its name. Azurite typically occurs in oxidized areas of copper deposits, where it forms through the alteration of copper sulfides. It is often found in association with another copper carbonate, malachite. Azurite can occur in several forms, ranging from monoclinic crystals to compact masses. It is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4. Because of its beautiful color and ease of cutting, Azurite has been used as a pigment and ornamental stone since ancient times.
