Faden quartz is a variety of quartz, a mineral composed of silicon dioxide. Its distinguishing feature is the presence of a linear, often whitish inclusion that runs through the crystal. This inclusion, called "faden" in German, meaning "thread," is actually a disturbed growth zone. During the formation of the crystal, a fracture or inclusion interrupted the crystal growth. Subsequently, the crystal resumed its growth, encompassing this disturbed zone in the form of a visible line.
Quartz fadens form in rock cavities, where conditions have allowed for slow, orderly growth. The presence of the faden indicates a specific geological event, such as a fracture of the rock, that disrupted the growth conditions.
Faden quartz has the same properties as other quartz varieties. Its hardness, density, and crystal structure are identical. However, the inclusion of faden can influence certain optical properties of the crystal, such as its transparency or color. Faden quartz is valued by collectors for its unique aesthetics and geological history.
