Pyrite is a common mineral in the Earth's crust. Its name comes from the Greek "pyr", meaning fire, in reference to the sparks it produces when struck with steel. This property, due to its hardness and chemical composition, made it a material once used to create fire. From a mineralogical point of view, pyrite is distinguished by its characteristic metallic luster and its brass-yellow color, often confused with gold. Its crystallization usually occurs in the cubic system, forming perfect cube-shaped crystals. However, it can also adopt other crystalline forms such as the octahedron or the pentagonal dodecahedron. The formation of pyrite is related to various geological processes. It is found in sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. It is often associated with other sulfides such as chalcopyrite or sphalerite, as well as iron oxides. The presence of pyrite in a rock may indicate particular formation conditions, such as an environment rich in sulfur and iron.
