Dolomite is a mineral composed mainly of calcium carbonate and magnesium. Its name comes from the French geologist Déodat de Gratet de Dolomieu who discovered it in 1791 in the Dolomite massif in Italy.
Dolomite occurs as elongated, massive crystals with varying colors, ranging from white to pink, yellow, brown, and gray. Its crystal structure is rhombohedral and its surfaces are generally uneven, giving it an "earthy" appearance.
Dolomite forms through a process of metamorphism and carbonation and is commonly found in carbonate sedimentary rocks, such as limestones and sandstones. It is also often associated with calcite, magnetite, pyrite and other minerals.
Dolomite has a variety of uses, including in the manufacture of cement and in fertilizers for agriculture. It is also used to produce glass, plaster, macadam and mortars.
In lithotherapy, dolomite is recognized for its stimulating and therapeutic properties. Dolomite stones are used to promote creativity, peace and love. They are also considered the ideal stone for healing mental, physical and emotional wounds and for stimulating the nervous and circulatory systems.
