Labradorite is a mineral from the plagioclase feldspar family, characterized by a spectacular play of colors, often in blue, green or gold. Its chemical formula indicates the presence of calcium, sodium, silicon and aluminum. It takes its name from the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where it was first discovered. Labradorite exhibits a unique optical property called labradorescence, which is an effect of refraction of light on the thin internal layers of the mineral, giving rise to vivid, changing colors. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it relatively resistant to scratches. It is used in jewelry and interior decoration due to its attractive appearance.
